Six free health services every Illawarra Woman needs to know about

At the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre we often find out about amazing services in our local community before anyone else.

We’ve pulled together a list of some of the ones our clients have found most helpful in the last few months.

Let us know if we’ve missed out any gems, and we’ll include them next time.

The Illawarra Women’s Health Centre’s Weavers Program supports carers in the Illawarra, offering peer-led support to help them cope and maintain their well-being while caring for a loved one with dementia.

Carers are paired with trained Weavers—women with lived experience—who provide guidance, emotional support, and social connection through visits, phone check-ins, and catch-ups, ensuring carers don’t face the journey alone.

The Dinner Table Project is a six-week family cooking program where adults and children aged eight and above prepare and share healthy home-cooked meals together.

This initiative aims to promote nutritious eating habits, enhance cooking skills, and strengthen family bonds through the shared experience of meal preparation and dining. Families can improve their health and well-being, learn new recipes, and enjoy quality time together, and we even hold the programme at our Women’s Health Centre in Warilla.

To find out more contact Linda at Healthy Cities Illawarra at 02 4283 8111.

Dental Care vouchers

Did you know that you could be eligible for a voucher to pay for dental care?

If you receive public dental services (a NSW resident, eligible for Medicare, and either under 18 or an adult with a valid concession card) then you may be entitled to a voucher to take care of your dental needs.

To find out more contact your local public dental service or call 1800 679 336. They’ll assess your situation and decide if a dental voucher is the right option for you.

If you’re approved, the type of voucher depends on your needs:

  • Urgent care vouchers: For immediate issues, valid for 1 month.
  • General care vouchers: For routine treatments, valid for 3 months.
  • Denture care vouchers: For dentures, valid for 3 months.

These vouchers can be used with eligible private providers.

If you have a minor cut, a suspected fracture, rash, or fever, then these are the many conditions that could be seen at a local Urgent Care Centre.

There are three centres in the Illawarra that provide fast treatment for non-emergency illnesses or injuries, helping to reduce pressure on emergency departments. Many centers have medical practitioners and diagnostic equipment like X-rays and pathology, enabling them to treat a variety of conditions.

Urgent Care Locations:

  • Bulli Hospital’s Urgent Care Centre (BUCC)
  • Wollongong Medicare Urgent Care Clinic: 46-50 Underwood St, Corrimal
  • Dapto Medicare Urgent Care Clinic: Bong Bong Rd & Princes Hwy, Dapto
